SmartMail, conserver l’ADN de l’email intact

SmartMail is not a mail provider
Questions for Eddie Nudel CEO & founder of SmartMail – Cette Startup a présenté son service à Londres lors de l’event TechCrunch Disrupt
How did you get the idea of the Startup?
From a personal point of view, I was in London on vacation with my wife and I had loads of emails to check. Having very limited time and poor internet connection I did want to waste my time in opening email I dont want to read in the first place and for the important ones, to get the job done as fast as possible. Eventually I found myself opening many apps, doing a lot of actions and basically working for the mail instead of all the way around.
In the past decade our digital life has changed a lot, we use social networks, e-commerce websites and so on. Ironically, even in 2014, you cannot access and registered them without an email address. So today we demand more from our inbox, especially on mobile devices – we need access to a whole world of links, apps and content: shipping notices, meeting requests, social updates, offers, coupons, personal messages, news, travel itineraries, dating, document referrals, media, etc. In order to get there, we are forced to leave our cozy inbox and are redirected either to a browser or an app; the loading time is long; the content isn’t always optimized for mobile and you can’t share it or make any changes. And after going through this tedious process, often you’ll find that the content isn’t even relevant to you – but you won’t know before you go through the whole thing. Bottom line – we waste time we don’t have on mobile emails.
So for me the future of email is this: bridging the gap between our overwhelmed digital life and the need to communicate with each other. Or simply put, get more power and information but with less effort and less engagement.
Why go on a very congested by the Giants of the internet market?
Although email arena is being dominated by « Giants », I believe that even after Inbox, non of them have managed to « crack the code ». Meaning that email is still way behind our digital life requirements in 2014/15 . When these « Giants » add new functionally, the user usually « pays » with more clicks, more engagement and more hustle (Mailbox’s Snooze, Inbox’s approach, etc.)
So basically the only thing we want is simple inbox and keep email’s DNA intact with less clicks, less apps to open and the faster handling time – unfortunately non of the « Giant » have managed to do it so far.
What is your technology?
Our core tech is set of algorithms formed into a unique processing engine that receives IMAP4 message, analyze it, aggregate relevant content, adds new layers of information and then sends it to the client in a new form of message, a-la-IMAP5. What we have actually made is a new email protocol that enables the power features that we offer.
What is your business model?
The app will be free and we will most likely wont do end user monetization. What we plan to do is to to partner with existing mail providers and implement our core algorithms in their platform giving royalties based model.
How did you approach security for your future customers
SmartMail is not a mail provider. We are mail client and a unique platform in the cloud that run the algorithms we develop. So, in some cases, the mail provider itself do the security check for external content and it wont hit your inbox. In the rest of the cases, before we send the message to the client, our secured server is doing content check with the link. Or simply put it validate it before it is send as a content item to the client.
