Question pour Dave Morin Co-fondateur de Path

Can you tell us as you get the idea of Path?

Social networks inspired a new culture of sharing. Now that the mobile era is upon us, we deserve a new way to tell our stories. Our mobile devices are with us as we experience life and carry our personal information – our location, music, photos and videos. Contact with our loved ones is just a button-press away. We wanted to create a more personal way for people to capture their lives on the go and share their stories with close friends and family. Path is a modern journal for the modern age.

How to differentiate between applications on the same subject?

I’m not sure what those would be. We believe that Path should help you authentically express yourself and help you share your life with close friends and family. It’s private by default and you should always be in control of your information.

Particular attention is given to the design, why?

At Apple I learned that great products start with great design. It’s hard to design a good interface for mobile and part of our vision was to tackle that problem. We also wanted to create an intimate and meaningful experience on Path, something very personal and unlike public social sharing which felt cold. Our designers and engineers have worked together from the very beginning to create a product that delights through design, information and communication. We’ve always believed in slow growth, building a product that is high quality and beautiful, that people share virally.

Number of users

Path launched Path 2 in Nov 2011 and has since doubled its users to 2M in the last 2 months. (Path originally launched a year earlier in 2010). Also, 70% of people who use Path return the next week and Path users have created over 50M items of content and half a billion pieces of feedback (15M pieces of feedback each day). The most common types of content shared on Path are photos, thoughts (status messages) and sleep records. Users post one song per second and the most popular artist is Drake. Path is biggest in the U.S. but other fast growing countries are the UK, Germany, Japan, France and Korea.
